Friday Dobber Prospect Ramblings – January 31st

Your resource to the 2015 NHL Draft and its midseason rankings - who's too high/low, Maple Leafs rant, Dylan Strome vs. Mitch Marner debate, Johnny Gaudreau and Max Domi post-WJC update...

Friday,January 30th

As a draft enthusiast and one that follows its eligible players religiously, January/February is an extremely busy time of the year. Some of the world’s best prospects have just wrapped up competing in the illustrious World Junior tournament, league play resumes shortly after for them and then the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game (as well as USHL Top Prospects Game) unfolds. Following that busy stretch, it marks a time where new rankings are constructed based on first half play and those rankings are usually very close to the final lists that come out pre-draft. Of course, there’s always chance to elevate their stock down the final 20 game stretch in their schedules and a long standout playoff run can certainly help a draft stock but generally speaking, scouts have a good idea of where players will fall in the upcoming draft.

On Wednesday, I put out my updated 2015 NHL Draft rankings (Midseason version). It was the first time that I have included players outside of the OHL. I wanted to make sure that I’ve been able to catch most of the top prospects live (if possible) or through online viewing. The Top 30 ranked prospects have profiles attached to them.

AHL All-Star Game Ramblings

The AHL All-Star Game, Jacob Markstrom's future and more...

The NHL all star game was this weekend, and it features some of the best the NHL has to offer, including great performances by recent prospects Filip Forsberg and Aaron Ekblad. Despite the usual protests, I personally thought it did what it set out to do, provide some fun for the fans and the stars both while showcasing the league.

Friday, January 23rd – CHL NHL Top Prospect Reaction

By |2015-07-28T12:54:34-04:00January 23rd, 2015|Prospects Rambling|

CHL NHL Top Prospects Game standouts and disappointments, Lawson Crouse rant, underrated Timo Meier and always mesmorizing Connor McDavid...

Friday,January 23rd

A busy week at the rinks has these ramblings coming in on Friday morning rather than Thursday. I apologize for that; however, with the focus on the CHL NHL Top Prospects Game, you’ll get first-hand analysis of the upcoming top prospects from the 2015 NHL Draft. After heading to the Meridian Centre rink early Thursday morning to catch the Team Cherry and Team Orr practices, I spent the afternoon writing up profiles for many of these kids. I will be releasing my updated 2015 NHL Draft Rankings early next week so stay tuned.

Exploiting the undrafted prospect in your pool, Top Prospect games, Anton Slepyshev and more…

The USHL/NHL top prospects game was last Tuesday, the CHL version is coming up on Thursday, and before you know it draft season will be in full swing. NHL teams are the ones who choose which prospects will  play in the game.

Undrafted prospects are Brendan’s forte, but it is definitely worth watching the CHL game if you haven’t been paying attention. It is a good way to begin the 2015 Draft immersion process, and get a leg up on your competition.

Has Olli Maatta had the unluckiest year of any 20 year old prospect, ever? Mumps, tumor and shoulder surgery? Come on. Yes, that run of injuries can give you some pause in terms of value, but I think he is actually an excellent buy low right now. With nine points in 20 games this year, while seeing slightly fewer offensive zone starts and better competition and getting 16 even strength minutes and 1.5 PP minutes on a stacked team… Maatta was on pace for an excellent age-20 season.

He has played 97, 85, and 85 games respectively the last three seasons, so durability really isn’t as much of a concern as it seems. If you can snatch him from someone in contention, do it.
