Fantasy Summary

Puck rushing offensive defenseman with flair and potential to contribute to the penalty column. Down the road, he has the potential to be a top scoring NHL defenseman if he can smooth out the rough edges of his game.

January 2020 – Since inking a single-year $925k prove-it deal last summer, Deangelo has emerged as one of the Rangers most valuable defenseman for now and the future. His production has been consistent thanks to a standard deployment in the offensive zone, but odds are that he will regress towards a more realistic rate of production. His upcoming RFA status will be a crossroads for the 24-year-old, as the contract he signs will set the expectations for his role going forward. Brayden Olafson

August 2018 – Stepping into the final year of his ELC that has been stretched out over five years, Deangelo will once again look to make himself a fixture on the Rangers blueline. In his first attempt to crack the Rangers roster as a regular, Deangelo struggled with injuries and a back-and-forth arrangement with the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack. A portion of Deangelo’s halted progress within the Rangers system could, in some people’s eyes, be attributed to Alain Vingneault’s lack of trust in the offensive-minded rearguard. With new head-coach David Quinn stepping behind the bench, Deangelo can hope for a fresh start and more favorable deployment going forward, but he’ll need to put in the work to ensure positive results. Brayden Olafson

June 2017 – For the second year in a row, Anthony DeAngelo has been traded on draft day. DeAngelo was acquired by the New York Rangers with the seventh-overall pick this year for Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta. Peter Harling

February 2017- With the Coyotes trading Michael Stone to the Calgary Flames on Feb. 20th, a roster spot opened and DeAngelo was recalled to Arizona for the third time this season. He had been in Tucson after serving a three game suspension in the NHL for abuse of officials. DeAngelo was penalized at the end of the second period of a Dec. 31 game against the Flames after he tried to push away an official’s hand as the referee steered him away from a scrum in the corner. In the AHL his focus has been on play in his own end after he showcased during his 20-game stay with the Coyotes that he has no problem translating his offensive instincts to the NHL. Even though DeAngelo has only played 20 games in the NHL, he still ranks tied for third among rookie defenseman with 2-4-6 on the power play and is one of two first-year blueliners to have scored multiple power-play goals. Keith Duggan

December 2016- After playing a few games in the AHL, DeAngelo has been recalled to the Coyotes once again, continuing his impressive play. His nine points is seventh among rookie defenseman in the NHL, despite playing half the amount of games as the others. DeAngelo could find himself back in the AHL mainly due to a numbers game in Arizona but he’s quickly showing the Coyotes that he belongs in the NHL. Keith Duggan

December 2016- Despite playing well offensively for the Coyotes, (2-5-7 in 11 games) Anthony DeAngelo has been sent back to the AHL. The Coyotes want him to continue working on his defensive game, play without the puck. Keith Duggan

November 2016- DeAngelo scored in his NHL debut for the Coyotes putting in a impressive first game in the big leagues. With Arizona winning the game, look for DeAngelo to get more time with the Coyotes. Keith Duggan

November 2016- With Michael Stone moved to the IR, DeAngelo has been recalled to the Coyotes. He has registered 1-4-5 totals in eight games with Tucson of the AHL. DeAngelo has been very effective offensively and could give the Yotes a jolt they badly need. He’s expected to make his Arizona debut against Colorado on 11/8. Keith Duggan

October 2016- After a very good showing at Coyotes training camp, then racking up two goals and an assist in five preseason games, with one of the team’s final cuts though Anthony DeAngelo has been sent to Tucson of the AHL. With the Coyotes suddenly deep on defense, another season in the AHL to work on his defensive side of the things will be good for his overall game. “He’ll go down there and start down there, but he certainly came into camp – for a player I didn’t know well – he came in and certainly impressed our staff,” Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said. “His skill set and skating is very unique, and he’s going to be a good player for a long time.” Keith Duggan

June 2016- The Coyotes dealt their 37th overall pick to the Lightning in a straight up trade for Anthony DeAngelo. The Coyotes are weak on right-shot defenseman, and grabbing one that racked up six goals and 43 points in 69 games as a AHL rookie seems like a steal of a trade. But this trade comes with risks, as DeAngelo was a healthy scratch several times in 2015-16 for what he called “coaches decision that could have been about my performance.” Translation, he has work to do in the defensive side of things. He is also a very emotional player on the ice which has resulted in him getting suspended in the past. DeAngelo said after being traded that maturity has helped him control his emotions:”It’s a couple mistakes I made. It’s far in the past. It was a learning experience.” DeAngelo had some sense he might get traded after what he called an “up and down” season in Syracuse. He could get a shot with the Coyotes in 2016-17 but look for him to probably spend another year in the AHL working on the defensive side of his game. Keith Duggan

April 2016 -DeAngelo followed up his post draft year with his first professional year of hockey for the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. Playing with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL, DeAngelo set a strong base for what he needs to improve on and what strengths he already possesses at the pro level. His offensive instincts and puck movement are already strong, but as former Sault Ste. Marie coach Sheldon Keefe suggested, Anthony has room to improve with his defensive game. After he was a healthy scratch for multiple games, the 20 year old came back strong to end the year. The New Jersey native added 12 points in his final 26 games while unraveling his aggressive side. March 2015 – On March 1st versus the London Knights, Anthony DeAngelo set a new career game-high five points scoring twice and picking up three assists for five points. After coming over to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in a trade deadline deal with Sarnia, DeAngelo has set career highs in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes, currently sitting with 20 goals, 57 assists and 77 points to lead all OHL defensemen for the second season in a row, holding a current 12-point lead. DeAngelo has only been held off the game sheet once in a Greyhounds jersey (his first game) and is riding a 19-game point streak totalling 10 goals and 39 points. There are few defensemen who are capable of creating offense as well as the young DeAngelo. He should be owned in all formats and is arguably the top fantasy prospect at defense to own. Brendan Ross

October 2014 – DeAngelo attended his first NHL camp with Tampa Bay and performed well overall. He’ll spend the season with Sarnia(OHL) where he’s expected to be amongst the league leaders in points among defenseman. Randall Buschmann

June 2014 – The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Anthony DeAngelo 19th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Brendan Ross

January 2014 – The OHL’s leading defensive scorer (by a large margin with 57 points through 37 games, 17 points clear of the next best), Anthony DeAngelo participated in the 2014 CHL/NHL Top Prospects game picking up an assist in Team Cherry’s loss. The highly skilled blue liner was also ranked 26th on TSN’s Bob McKenzie’s 2014 NHL Draft Mid-Term Rankings. Brendan Ross

October 2013 – Known for his free-wheeling style of hockey, Tony DeAngelo appears to be maturing as a defender showing an improvement in his ability to jump into the rush. This more responsible style of hockey will sit much better with NHL scouts as he performs throughout his draft year. DeAngelo is one of the few OHL defensemen who has the ability to rush the puck end to end with ease and his defensive leading 10 points in eight games this season is a testament to that rare skill set. Brendan Ross

August 2013 – After finishing his sophomore season third in defensive OHL scoring with nine goals and 58 points as a 17-year-old (trailing only NHL-drafted prospects Ryan Sproul and Cody Ceci), Anthony DeAngelo will be looked at to carry Sarnia’s offence from the blue line. DeAngelo is a hungry and aggressive undersized offensive defenseman who salivates when the puck is on his stick and his confidence in possession is off-the-charts as he dangles up the ice. Unfortunately, the toe-drags and high risk maneuvers occur too often and in ill-advised areas of the ice, leading to costly turnovers and offensive chances for the opposition. He will need to pick his spots better and manage his hot-tempered personality, all while improving his defensive game, in order to hold onto a first round ranking for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. DeAngelo will contend for the OHL defensive scoring title. Brendan Ross
