Observations:

January 2018 - Formenton is bring a gold medal back to London having been part of Canada's contingent in Buffalo. His elite level speed was on display all tournament long as he chipped in a pair of goals and two assists in the seven games. Back with London he's producing at a point-per-game pace with 21 points in 20 games. Brad Phillips

October 2017 – In one of the more surprising developments to come from the last few draft classes, Formenton has signed his entry-level deal and cracked the Senators opening night roster. It's been quite the rise going from playing fourth line minutes in London to the NHL in a matter of six months. It remains to be seen how much he plays and if he sticks around past the nine game mark. Brad Phillips

September 2017 – Formenton has been the surprise of camp, sticking around through the latest round of cuts. He’s impressed both coach Guy Boucher and GM Pierre Dorion with his speed and tenacity on the fore-check. In four games of preseason action Forementon has potted one goal and assisted on two others. Just two weeks past his 18th birthday it’s still hard to fathom that he makes the opening night squad. But the possibility is increasing with each passing day. If he does make the team don’t expect a lot of production. He’s one to stash away for the future. Brad Phillips

September 2017In his latest "31 Thoughts" column, Elliotte Friedman mentioned Formenton as the player that the other Senators' players were most impressed by. He's a longshot to make the team but it's encouraging news to say the least about the recent second rounder. While it may still be too early to snatch him up yet, he's worth adding to your watch list to see how he comes out of the gates in London. Brad Phillips

June 2017 – With their second round pick the Senators selected one of the youngest players in the draft, Alex Formenton, making the cut-off by just two days. Drafted from the London Knights of the OHL, Formenton played 65 games finishing in a tie for sixth on the team with 16 goals and also added 18 helpers, but posted bupkis in 14 playoff games. Forementon’s three greatest assets are his speed, speed and speed. He’s probably the fastest player in the 2017 draft possessing elite level wheels capable of beating anyone one-on-one. Add to that some excellent hand-eye coordination and the ability to get his shot off in a hurry and you have a potential lethal package.

Formenton is still growing into his body having experienced a massive growth spurt by shooting up seven inches in the past two years. If he can manage to add another 15-20 pounds to his frame while maintaining his foot speed he could be an absolute nightmare at the NHL level. The speedster is in an ideal spot playing in the NHL factory that is London and with a few veteran forwards set to graduate it wouldn’t be shocking to see him breakout in his sophomore OHL campaign, similar to his teammate Cliff Pu post-draft.  Brad Phillips
