Observations:

August 2015 – Berra spent most of the 2014-15 season serving as the backup goalie for the Avalanche, where he posted a 2.65 GAA and 0.918 SV% in 19 starts. More starts were available during an injury to starter Varlamov, however the strong play of called-up Pickard ate into Berra's extended playing time. In fact, Berra's lackluster play during this period earned him a conditioning stint in the AHL (where he recorded a 2.57 GAA, 0.914 SV%, and an impressive goal) once Varlamov returned. Coach Roy was often publicly unhappy with Berra's play, so while he will get another chance as the backup next season, his leash may be short. Hayden Soboleski

 

March 2014 – Trade Deadline Deal: Reto Berra was acquired by the Colorado Avalanche for a 2014 2nd round draft pick. In 29 games with the Calgary Flames, Berra posted a pedestrian 2.95 goals-against-average and .897 save percentage. Berra sits behind both Varlamov and JS Giguere in the depth chart with promising goaltending prospects Sami Aittokallio and Calvin Pickard coming up the pipelines so earning starts won't be easy. Brendan Ross

 

November 2013 – Berra was recalled by the Flames as they continue to search for consistent netminding. In his first start he turned away 42 shots and earned an overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks. Berra fills the net and controls his rebounds well, but his demeanor is very impressive. He didn't appear intimidated by the defending champs and seemed to have a calming affect on the Flames. Berra certainly earned more NHL time with that showing and is quite possibly Calgary's goalie of the future. Rich Dillon

 

March, 2013 –  Reto Berra is another relatively unknown prospect picked up by Flames GM Jay Feaster, as he was included in the Jay Bouwmeester trade with St. Louis. He is a large goaltender at 6’4” tall, but shows impressive agility for a man his size. At 26 years of age, Berra is a bit of a long shot to play for the Flames as he has played exclusively in his native country of Switzerland. With a larger ice surface and much different skill level than he would face in the NHL, it will be interesting to see how his game translates to North America. He did shine at the recent IIHF World Hockey Championship, posting an amazing 1.00 GAA and .967 save percentage. A trademark of his game is his competitiveness, and refusal to give up on a scoring chance, often making a save on his back. In April, he signed a one year two way contract with Calgary, and now has an opportunity in Calgary with a team that has arguably the thinnest goaltending situation in the NHL. Sheldon Curtis

 

Fantasy Outlook: C-

At this age, some goalies find their game and surprise an organization with a mature and consistent effort. Berra’s future is most likely playing a dozen or so games as an NHL backup.
