Observations:

Dec 2017 - David Rittich has found success so far in the NHL. He's started two games and appeared in three which has led to a 2-1-0 record with a 2.57 GAA and 0.913 save percentage. He's has been pretty solid in net and certainly there isn't a reason to send him back down to Stockton. Calgary hasn't had many backup goaltenders over the years that could give consistent winning efforts. He is reliable on a back-to-back. - Joel Henderson

Nov 2017 - The 25-year-old Czech goaltender was playing for BK Mlada Boleslava when Calgary was scouting his play. He was certainly playing night in and night out and looking steady with his skillset (2.53 and 0.917%). He was brought into Calgary training camp as a curious mystery. All eyes were turned on Jon Gillies and Tyler Parsons as the future of the organization and David Rittich was a stop gap goaltender with a little bit of promise who would provide a solid tandem in the AHL. He went on to perform with top-10 AHL numbers and be a quality netminder every time he got the crease.

David Rittich is a big goaltender who plays big. Standing straight up in the crease, he looks gigantic. His flexibility can be surpising at times too; stretching his pads out in a scramble play to make a big save. While Calgary's system is used to flexible goaltenders who make spectacular athletic saves, Rittich relies more on his solid positioning to be consistent. A playing style comparable that fans might draw from would be Hiller opposed to Ortio. His rebound control is certainly above average and he has the ability to make a simple quiet save. If the defense does a solid job of taking away the quick side to side passes, Rittich can win you games. You'll notice he makes a priority of hugging the post when defenders are going wide. He certainly has the ability to be solid in net as a backup at the NHL level. His numbers in the AHL and other netminders like him (Aaron Dell) have proven they can be valuable.  Joel Henderson
