Derek Forbort, D

Shoots: L

Height: 6-4

Weight: 218

Born: 1992-03-04

Hometown: Duluth, MN

Drafted: 2010 by Los Angeles Kings, 15th Overall

Observations:

January 2017 – Despite being selected by the Kings in the first round in 2010, Forbort had failed to impress the Kings coming into this season.  He had not gained any supporters with coaching or management in his 14 game call-up, but he continued to be solid for Ontario. This season he has shown tremendous growth and has earned himself big minutes alongside Drew Doughty.  Forbort is on pace to score 23 points, but he does not get power play time and don't expect he will in the future.  He probably doesn't have the tools to be fantasy relevant in all but the deepest of fantasy hockey leagues, but he has proved that he does belong in the NHL. Philip Kamhi

September 2016 – The former first-round pick had a decent season for the Ontario Reign, scoring 10 points in 40 games. However, his 14 games with the big club did not seem to impress Kings coaching staff. He scored his first goal and first assist, and actually led the team with a 62.3% Corsi For Percentage (CF%). Don't get too excited about this statistic though, as 14 games is not a large enough sample size to really evaluate. He signed a two-year bridge contract ($650k) in July, so this will be a chance for him to prove himself. There will be stiff competition for a Kings spot, and it seems like Kevin Gravel might be a few steps closer. Philip Kamhi

February 2015LA has just called up Forbort, the only 2010 first-round pick to never appear in an NHL game. He's come a long way defensively since being scratched in last season's AHL playoffs. The rangy, disciplined defender skates well but has limited offensive upside. He's never scored 20-plus points at the NCAA or AHL level. Sheng Peng

April 2013Forbort signed an entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings, foregoing his senior season of eligibility at the University of North Dakota. Forbort had 17 points in 43 games in his final season, and will be reporting to Manchester in the AHL. he doesn't project as a big fantasy contributor at this point, but certainly worth keeping an eye on as his career progresses. Rich Dillon

February 2012 – A sophomore at the University of North Dakota, Derek Forbort is an excellent skater with great size on the blueline.  A product of the USNDP and veteran of two World Junior Championships, Forbort has more offensive skill than his production (22 points in 62 games at UND) shows. Rich Dillon

Fantasy Outlook: D

Forbort is not progressing as quickly as other L.A. blueline prospects, and he could have a tough time getting onto the NHL roster. Even if he does, it will not attract much attention from poolies.
