Observations:

July 2017 – The Detroit Red Wings did not make a qualifying offer to Paterson, making him a UFA. Peter Harling

January 2015- The OHL trade deadline has come and gone with plenty of movement happening around the league including a deal that sends Jake Paterson to the Kitchener Rangers. The Rangers acquired Paterson from the Saginaw Spirit for a 2017 third round pick and 2018 second round pick. A relatively cheap price for a perrennially strong netminder who has always had the reputation of being a good goaltender on a bad team. The move was a bit of a surprise with the Rangers looking like they were sellers, but with this transaction they are hoping to stay competitive with a whack of '96 born players hoping to gain some valuable experience for what should be a competitive and promising 2015-16 season. You can never count a team out with a hot goaltender and that's exactly what you could see happen here with the change of scenery for Jake as he looks to go out on top in his overage season. Travis Watson

 

October 2014- With the opportunity for playing time between the pipes looking scarce having Mrazek and McCollum in Grand Rapids and Jared Coreau in Toledo the Red Wings decided Paterson's best opportunity to develop would be back in Junior with the Saginaw Spirit. His presence back in Saginaw has helped rejuvenate the Spirit where he currently sits on a 3-3 record and stacks up in the top eight in the league for both goals against average and save percentage. In his last outing he was in the zone locking down the cage securing his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win over the Peterborough Petes. This is Paterson's overage season and he is a candidate to get moved as the season progresses. Whereever he ends up though you know he will always give the team a chance to win the game. Look for a big season by Paterson where he will be out to prove he's as good as they come in the OHL. Travis Watson

 

April 2014 – After being eliminated from OHL playoff action, Jake Paterson has been recalled by the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. Paterson had a bit of an up-and-down season with the Saginaw Spirit and the 2014 WJC team. He was strong through the final months of the OHL season but neither he nor his Spirit team could lift their team over the Erie Otters in the opening round of playoff action. Paterson carried much of the load in Saginaw finishing with a 24-18-2-0 record. His 3.41 GAA, .906 save percentage and two shutouts were all improvements on his 2012-13 statistics. With Petr Mrazek and Tom McCollum sitting as the Griffins' 1-2 punch, Paterson will use his time up with Grand Rapids to familiarize himself with professional hockey. Brendan Ross

 

January 2014- Paterson had been on a tear since his return from the 2014 WJHC coming away with four straight victories until his clunker versus the Plymouth Whalers(1/20/2014). During his four game win streak he held the high scoring London Knights to one goal through two games and had an astounding 59 saves in an 3-1 victory at Budweiser Gardens on January 17th. It was reminiscent of this past years playoffs when Paterson made 67 saves on 70 shots but the difference being this time Paterson was able to come away with the win. He has certainly proved his worth to the Spirit as the Spirit struggled to put together wins losing six straight games while he was away during the World Junior Championships. If Saginaw is looking to go on a run and do some damage look no further then the crease as it will be because of the play of their starting netminder. Travis Watson

 

January 2014- Paterson was able to wrestle away the starters gig from Zachary Fucale to open up the tournament but wasn’t able to carry the momentum and provide the stability that Canada is accustomed to. Brent Sutter said before the tournament that he envisioned both guys getting a game and he was correct with Paterson between the pipes for Canada’s first two games before taking a backseat to Fucale the rest of the way. Paterson had a couple goals go in that he would’ve liked to have back ibut it basically came down to he was good but not good enough when he needed to be. Paterson will head back to Saginaw where he will look to help get the Spirit back on track and out of the current 3-6-1 funk they are in. Travis Watson

 

December 2013 – Jake Paterson has been named to Team Canada's final roster for the 2014 World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden and will battle with Canadiens prospect goaltender Zach Fucale for the starting position. Paterson impressed in Canada's second pre-tournament game earning Player of the Game honours despite falling to the Swedes 3-0. Canada will need both goaltenders to play strong in order to challenge for a gold medal against the Swedes, Americans and Russians. Brendan Ross

 

December 2013- As expected Paterson was named along with Zachary Fucale as Team Canada’s final two netminders for the 2014 World Junior Championships. Paterson now hopes to take the starters gig and prove that experience trumps youth in helping lead Canada to victory. I for one am very anxious to see Paterson play behind a team of Canada’s caliber as he has consistently been a part of mediocre teams in Saginaw and still managed to impress.   Travis Watson

 

November 2013- Detroit has to feel pretty good about the number of quality netminders they have coming up through the pipeline. We have already seen what Petr Mrazek has to offer leading Grand Rapids to the Calder Cup last season and registering his first career NHL shutout in spot start duty just this season and we got a glimpse of what to come this past summer with another up and coming prospect in Jake Paterson. The Red Wings didn't need anymore time to figure out if Paterson was the real deal or not after helping lead the Red Wings prospect team to victory in Traverse City so they locked him up to an entry-level deal back in September to secure his rights for the next three seasons. So far this season Paterson has been his usual self carrying the load in Saginaw trying to help keep a middling team competitive and score some upset wins to help keep the Spirit fans coming back. With his pedigree and play to date he has caught the eye of Hockey Canada and has been invited to participate in the upcoming CHL Subway Series in Sudbury on November 25th against the Russian Junior team. Paterson will look to lead Team OHL to victory and help give himself a leg up on the competition to backstopping Team Canada's goal for the 2013-14 World Junior Hockey Championship in Malmo, Sweden. April 2013- Jake Paterson had a stellar season for the rebuilding Saginaw Spirit showing flashes of brilliance while also falling victim to the poor play displayed in front of him. Paterson had a solid 25-18-3-2 record on the season with a not-so-hot 3.53 GAA and .901 SV % which I feel is reflected more so on the inexperience and depth on the Spirit roster then Paterson’s ability. This was proven in the playoffs as the Spirit succumbed to the reigning OHL Champion London Knights in a clean sweep but Paterson was almost able to squeeze out a victory in game two putting together a remarkable 67-save effort in the double overtime loss.

Was Team Canada’s third stringer for the World Junior Championships this past year and is in the running to lead between the pipes for the Canadian squad for next year’s championship in Malmo, Sweden.

 

 

Fantasy Outlook: C-

Another solid goaltending prospect for the Wings. The biggest thing is consistency and staying confident in his own ability regardless of the score.
