Observations:

January 2016- Megna has officially been recalled to the NHL and will make his debut as a New York Ranger in a contest against the Dallas Stars (Jan. 5 2016). In the first 34 games of his AHL season with the Wolfpack, Megna has seven goals, 11 assists (18 PTS), and a minus-4 rating. His stat line does not jump off the page, but he leads the Wolfpack in shots on goal (110), and will be getting the opportunity to play on a top-3 line in New York. With the loss of Chris Kreider, who is day-to-day with an injury, the Rangers are hoping Megna can find some production as they continue to plummet in the standings. Bryan Puffer

 

February 2015 – The undrafted late-bloomer played 12 NHL games without distinction during a grim run of Pittsburgh injuries. Just one assist and a minus-2 rating earned him a trip back to the AHL Penguins. A willing digger with good speed, the former U.S. college player has 14 goals and seven assists in 39 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with a plus-11 rating, indicating some ability, just not enough yet to succeed in the NHL. December 2014 – Ranked sixth among Pittsburgh prospects in The Hockey News 2014 Future Watch, the 23-year-old is a tremendous skater. He was returned Dec. 13 to the AHL after a nine-game, one-assist NHL stint. In 19 AHL games this season, he stands fifth in team scoring with nine goals and four assists. A plus-8 rating and 21.4 shooting percentage hasn’t escaped the notice of the big club, but cracking Pittsburgh’s lineup as a skilled center is a daunting task. Mark Allan

 

June, 2014 – Jayson Megna is a big, lanky forward with offensive upside. He plays a gritty game, but also has a lot of hidden talent that shows itself in bursts. In his second pro season with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins of the AHL, he played all over the line-up, and had a good offensive year. In 25 games, Megna had 15 points. Megna has proven that he is capable of centering a scoring-line, or a checking-line, and that is a very valuable skill to have. As with a lot of prospects, Jayson needs to put on weight if he is to truly reach his upside. Megna has already played in 36 NHL regular season games, and totaled 9 points, which is very good considering his lack of pro experience.

 

 

Fantasy Outlook: D

Jayson Megna is a prospect whose upside is a bit of a mystery, he was very good offensively in his two seasons in the USHL, and then was dominant in his only season at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Megna seems to have a lot of upside that might be hidden beneath his gritty, two-way game. At this point, Megna isn't fantasy worthy.
