Observations:

October 2017 – The 30-year-old was not made a qualifying offer from the Hawks and has signed in the KHL. There is no fantasy value in Johansson. Peter Harling

May 2016 – The reigning Swedish Hockey League (SHL) Goalie of the Year, Johansson posted a 27-6 record and a sizzling 1.74 GAA in 2015-16. Hailing from Sweden, his signing immediately brings up memories of Jonas Gustavsson coming to the NHL as a 24 year-old in 2009. Johansson isn’t nearly as big as Gustavsson, but comes over as a more polished goaltender, having spent three full seasons in the SHL. Johansson is said to play a very conservative style in net, letting the game come to him. His weakness is his rebound control, but his numbers in the SHL speak for themselves.

Looking ahead, Johansson will likely open the season as the starter with the Rockford IceHogs where he will get a chance to adjust to the North American game and ice dimensions. With both Corey Crawford and Scott Harling under contract for next season, there is no rush to get him to the NHL at this point. Matt Donohue

Will be the starting goaltender in the AHL this fall and could become relevant if an injury fells one of the Hawks’ goalies.
