Observations:

July 2015 – Bodie had an up-and-down first professional campaign in the AHL. In 75 games he posted five goals and 32 points total, 11 of them was on the man advantage. After his terrific start (nine points in 11 games) he struggled during the mid-season. He made a lot of mistakes in his own zone. The 25-year-old defenseman has a weak frame, which means he is getting pushed away from the puck often and loses a lot of board battles. Bodie is a smooth skater with good passing skills. He is a good puck mover on the power play and very smart decision maker. During the last stretch of the season Bodie reshaped his game. He stepped up his defensive play a lot and not afraid of getting hit anymore. He played with a lot of confidence in the AHL playoffs. He scored three goals and added another four helper during Hartford’s playoff run in 15 games. Rangers re-upped their most offensive gifted defenseman prospect for another year in July thanks to his late season performance. Bodie will spend another year in Hartford to develop his defensive game. If he has serious NHL dreams, then he has to hit the gym again this summer and put up some muscle. Jozsef Kurtosi

November 2014 – The New York Rangers were extremely aggressive in the college free agent market last spring and after signing Ryan Haggerty and Chris McCarthy, they also stole Union College’s captain Mat Bodie. In four years with the Dutchmen, Bodie posted 124 points in 154 games as a defenseman. In 2013-14, Bodie had a career year with 39 points in 40 contests including 31 assists and was named a first-team All-American. He was incredible in the national tournament with seven points in four games, including a goal in each game. To start the 2014-15 season, in his first 15 professional games, Bodie has one goal and nine assists and leads the Hartford defensive unit in scoring. He is an excellent skater with terrific offensive sense. Bodie has a quick release, plays aggressive, reads plays extremely well at both ends and has excellent recovery speed. The main concern with him is his below average size. Jozsef Kurtosi

Fantasy Outlook: C –

Bodie is an offensive dynamo with solid defensive skills. His best ceiling is a Torey Krug type of player but if he wants to endure a long professional career, he will need to put on some serious weight in gym next summer.
