Observations:

March 2018 – Wood has vastly improved in the offensive categories in his second full year as an NHL pro. He has more than doubled his goal tally from his rookie year and continues to improve his all around game. Wood’s biggest strength is his straightaway speed ranking as one of the fastest players in the NHL. He should be an excellent role player for years to come and help provide some much needed secondary scoring. Grant Frey

May 2017 – Wood was a rare bright spot in a dismal Devils campaign. He did most of his damage early with eight goals and six assists in his first forty games but ran out of gas late, registering his final goal in mid-February and just three assists in his last twenty contests. Wood could use some work on puck possession, but overall generated excitement with his powerful game and willingness to stand up for teammates, leading the team with 86 PIM (second among NHL rookies to Matthew Tkachuk), six majors, and two misconducts. Might work well on a tough, potent line with Michael McLeod in Newark next year. Kevin Wickersham

 

January 2017 – In 31 contests with New Jersey since his early season recall from AHL Albany, Wood has quickly impressed as a scorer (seven goals and four assists) with a physical game that isn’t afraid to stand up for his teammates (33 PIM – including several impressive fighting majors). Wowing teammates and coaches alike with his on-ice speed, aggressiveness, and relentless forechecking, Wood has carved out a niche on the Devils, most recently skating on a line with Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique and serving regularly on New Jersey’s top power play unit. With a shot percentage of 13% his production rate may not last, but his impression seemingly will as Wood looks primed to stick with the big club for the foreseeable future and increase his average 12:12 ice time per game. – Kevin Wickersham

November 2016 – After earning a spot on New Jersey’s opening-night roster, Wood was sent to Albany following the nextsecond game in conjunction with fellow forward Sergey Kalinin exiting the injured reserve list. In the AHL Wood has seen regular ice time during this, his first professional campaign, which was difficult to come by in his short tenure with the parent club as he averaged just 10:26 minutes per game. The son of longtime Islander and Sabre forward Randy Wood, Miles has shown glimpses of the finesse of a skilled scorer with the size and toughness of a hard-checking power forward. He has collected a good number of penalty minutes early on in his professional career, earning 28 minutes thus far in 12 games with Albany, as well as a goal and three assists. Kevin Wickersham

May 2016 – Wood had a strong freshman season for Boston College, finishing fifth in scoring for the Eagles with 10 goals and 25 assists. The Devils opted to sign him to a three-year entry-level contract in April. Wood got to play his NHL debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs, registering two shots on goal in 13:06 of ice time. Wood is playing for Team USA at the world championship in Russia. He has scored one goal thus far, finishing with a wrist shot against Belarus. Wood is an excellent skater with powerful strides and strong agility. He makes smart decisions with the puck and isn't afraid of going into puck battles. A prospect with clear power forward potential, Wood has a deceptive shot as well. Marco Bombino

December 2015: Miles Wood has caught the attention of many scouts this year. As a freshman at Boston College Wood currently sits as the 3^rd leader in points with seven goals and 19 points in 15 games. He is behind 2015 first round pick Colin White and Casey Fitzgerald. Wood plays a complete pro style game and there is a chance he can turn pro next year with the Devils. If Wood stays one more year at Boston College he can become a free agent in 2017. Justin Nobre

June 2015 – Miles Wood has the combination of size, speed and skill that every NHL team covets. The only problem is he hasn’t played against the stiffest of competition. Wood has spent the past three years playing hockey at Noble & Greenough, a New England Prep school. He has dominated ever since his rookie season posting two points per game in his last two seasons. Wood plays a power forward type of game with skill and is more than able to chip in offensively.  His best attribute is his skating, by far. Surprisingly enough, Wood made the final cut for the USA 2015 World Juniors team, the first time a highschool player had done so since the USNTDP was established in 1997. Although he did not register a point he had a decent tournament as he played a few games with top 2015 prospect, Jack Eichel and top 2016 prospect, Auston Matthews. According to him, his New Years game against Canada was the best he has ever played. Wood didn’t make any flashy plays but he used his big frame to win puck battles on the boards and he would also crash the net and screen the goalie. He kept his game simple but he showed that he belonged playing with the best prospects in the world. Next season Wood will be joining a stacked Boston College team with fellow Devils prospect and Eagles assistant captain Steve Santini. Wood will most likely play in a bottom six role due to the Eagles’ depth. Justin Nobre
