Observations:

July 2017 - In what was a bit of a step backward from a scoring output perspective, Tolchinsky's points-per-game rate dropped in his second professional season from .50 in 2015-16 to .38 a season ago. He battled some injury issues throughout the year, and spent two games at the NHL level, picking up an assist in the process. The talented winger has one season left on his entry-level contract before becoming an RFA at the end of this season. He will likely benefit from the influx of talent coming into Charlotte this season, so expect a bounceback year.   Kevin LeBlanc

October 2016 - Tolchinsky will start the season in Charlotte after picking up a minor injury in the preseason. He is a candidate to spend stints both in the AHL and the NHL this season, and will be an offensive producer at both levels. The diminutive Russian forward will be relied upon to bring creativity and leadership to the Charlotte lineup this season.  Kevin LeBlanc

March 2016 – Tolchinsky’s first professional season has been a mixed bag. He is player with an incredibly high talent level, but one that will likely need time and patience in order to fully develop. In 55 games with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, Tolchinsky has posted 26 points, good for fifth on the team. He has played much better since the turn to 2016, adjusting to the larger, faster AHL. Likely, the undersized winger will spend next season in Charlotte as well, with increased offensive responsibility.   Kevin LeBlanc

April 2015 – Tolchinsky continues to put up points at a torrid pace in the Ontario Hockey League.  The Russian winger followed up on his 91 point breakout season for Sault Ste. Marie in 2013-14 with a 95 point performance this season. He has also added nine points in eight playoff games for the top ranked club as of April 20th, 2015. Tolchinsky was a major piece of the Russian team that won the silver medal at the 2015 World Junior Championships, with five points in seven games.  As a small, creative winger, Tolchinsky is going to have to score at the NHL level to be a viable fantasy asset.  Given his stature he will probably take time to adjust to playing against larger, more physical defensemen. He should factor into Charlotte’s plans in the AHL next season, and fantasy owners will be able to see how he fares against a more close checking style of play. With diminutive players like Johnny Gaudreau and Tyler Johnson making huge impacts upon their clubs this season, the Hurricanes will be hoping that Tolchinsky can bring them a similar return in the future. Kevin LeBlanc

August 2013 – After being passed over at the 2013 NHL Draft, Sergey Tolchinsky has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. Tolchinsky attended the Hurricanes development camp (also attended the Rangers' development camp) and impressed Carolina with his skilled, hard-working game and now will be featured in the Traverse City Prospects Tournament in September 2013. June 2013 – Tolchinsky ventured to North America after being selected 12th overall in the 2012 CHL Import Draft and added some offensive depth to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Watch Tolchinsky play and it’s clear that he is exceptionally skilled offensively but it’s also very easy to see how small he is. Tolchinsky is a dynamic skater with great agility and elusiveness in his stride. The biggest knock on Tolchinsky, besides his diminutive size, is his lack of overall strength. At the major junior level, Tolchinsky is easily contained by the bigger more physical defenders and can get man-handled at times. He will need to add considerable strength before he is deemed a legitimate NHL worthy prospect.Brendan Ross

Fantasy Outlook: C+

There is no denying Tolchinsky’s creative offensive skill set but until he bulks up with more strength, he remains a huge boom-bust fantasy prospect.
