Observations:

January 2017 - Martin has been named as an AHL All Star. The goaltender is having a stellar year, seizing 23 starts so far (battling with the capable, experienced alternative Jeremy Smith) and posting a 0.920 SV% on a squad who have been losing defence to injury throughout the season. Though a long ways off with a lot of work to do, Martin may be the goalie of the future for the Avs. Hayden Soboleski

December 2016 - Martin has been called-up to the Avs while Varlamov recooperates from a groin injury. He will serves as the backup to Pickard, but could earn the occasional start if Pickard doesn't step up his game. Unfortunately, earning starts for the Avalanche right now is fantasy irrelevant other than in the category of straight up number of saves. Martin has been very successful in his first season as a full-time AHL starting goalie, posting a .924 SV% in 18 games so far behind a struggling team. Hayden Soboleski

October 2016 - Spencer Martin will start the 2016-17 seaon in the AHL and be given every opportunity to be the number one goaltender in San Antonio. The Rampage have a solid 1B in place in Smith, so the big question will be how many starts Martin can handle. He remains the top goaltender in the system now that Pickard has been permanently promoted, but is still years away from a serious NHL tryout. Hayden Soboleski

March 2016 - Martin has now split his season between the AHL and the ECHL, acting as the starter in whichever league has the spot for him. He holds a strong .921 SV% in 18 AHL games along with a surpringly (shockingly) low .882 SV% in the ECHL. With Pickard likely to graduate to a full time NHL backup role somewhere next year, Martin will be the frontrunner for the AHL full time starter position. Hayden Soboleski

November 2015 - While Pickard is called-up by the Avalanche (until Varlamov is healthy), Martin will be playing with the San Antonio Rampage. He posted a 46-save win in his first AHL game. Hayden Soboleski

October 2015 - Martin has been assigned to the Fort Wayne Komets to start the 2015-16 season, where he will be the starting goalie. Management believe that being a full time starter in Fort Wayne will serve Martin better than being a backup goalie to Pickard in the AHL. Hayden Soboleski

May 2015 – Martin assumed the role of starting goaltender for Mississauga for the 2014-15 season before suffering a season-ending knee injury. In 31 games he went 15-13-1 with a 2.98 GAA and 0.921. His torn ACL and meniscus should be fully healed in time for Av’s training camp next season, where he will try to earn a spot in the AHL. Martin has all the tools to become an effective major league goalie, but his young age and the crowded crease in Colorado may cause delays. Hayden Soboleski

October 2014 – Goaltender Spencer Martin has been named to the OHL’s roster for the upcoming Subway® Super Series on November 13th and 17th in Peterborough and Kingston, respectively. Brendan Ross

April 2014 - After being eliminated from OHL playoff action, Spencer Martin has been recalled by the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters. Martin was a pure workhorse with the Steelheads in 2013-14 appearing in 64 of 68 games. He continues to show the ability to make game saving stops in critical moments of the game and his arrival in Lake Erie will give him a taste of professional hockey. Martin finished with a  24-33-1-0 record. His 3.54 GAA, .899 save percentage were all lower than his 2012-13 statistics but he did record his first career shutout and added three of them in total. Brendan Ross

November 2013 - Spencer Martin is a tall slender goaltender, and he takes advantage of that. Martin plays with great confidence, playing high in the crease and challenging shooters, he has great vision, and plays the angles like a pro, his glove is always high and extremely quick. Martin is a butterfly goalie and takes away the bottom of the net; he is strong laterally and has a great initial push from side to side, and excellent recovery. One issue Martin has had is his mental recovery; he tends to have a long memory when things don’t go his way.

Fantasy Outlook:: B

Spencer Martin will make it to the NHL at some point. He will go through the usual steps and finish his career in the juniors moving to the AHL and eventually challenge for an NHL spot. He has potential to become an elite goaltender and has the technique to get him there.
