October 2020 – The 28-year-old McKegg has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Boston Bruins that will likely see him continue on his career path as a fringe NHL player. Brayden Olafson

January 2020 – The Rangers have utilized McKegg heavily in a checking role on their young and developing team. His current fantasy relevance remains about as low as any active NHL player, but the very fact that he’s earning reps in the league may make him a temporary option for very deep leagues. The Rangers remain keen on developing the young players in their system so while McKegg will likely remain in the league as a placeholder for the duration of the year, his job security past this spring is uncertain. Brayden Olafson

February 2018 – The minor-league center came from Pittsburgh in a curious trade of two soon-to-be free-agent forwards. McKegg, two years younger at 25, will be an RFA while Josh Jooris will be a UFA. Losing a player who had just six points in 31 NHL games this season, the Hurricanes get one who registered a mere two goals and two assists in 26 games with Pittsburgh. Signed as a free agent last summer, the 6-0, 192-pound McKegg is a former third-round pick now with his fifth NHL organization. He has some AHL playmaking skill and two-way awareness but with five goals, seven assists and plus-10 in 28 AHL games this campaign, he is presenting as a useful minor-league depth forward but not much more. Mark Allan

January 2018 – He’s got two goals and two assists in 26 Pittsburgh games, but didn’t pass muster as the Penguins keep trying to augment their bottom six. The 25-year-old has four goals and four assists in 17 games with Wilkes-Barre Scranton, his fourth AHL team. Plus-12 indicates he’s a useful AHL player, but McKegg appears to be a fourth-line NHLer at best. Mark Allan

October 2017 – GM Jim Rutherford might have slowed his search for a third-line C because of McKegg’s play. The former Maple Leaf third-round pick has a shorthanded goal and two assists after six games. Playing most of the time between Patric Hornqvist and Carl Hagelin, he added four PIMs and is even at plus/minus. He’s got only two hits, but has blocked six shots and is on the second PK unit. The 25-year-old, who is already on his fourth NHL team, might have found a home in Pittsburgh. Mark Allan

 September 2017 – Using a versatile skill set that includes high-end speed, determination and faceoff skill, McKegg is forcing his way into the third-line center conversation. He scored against Detroit when his 21:46 TOI topped all Penguin forwards in a pre-season encounter. Head coach Mike Sullivan is taking a good look, using the solidly built McKegg on both special teams. The 25-year-old’s 65-game NHL resumé might give him an edge over training camp rivals who include Carter Rowney, Teddy Blueger and Adam Johnson, but expect only modest offense should McKegg make the final cut. Mark Allan

July 2017 – After splitting 46 games between Tampa Bay and Florida in 2016-17 and registering three goals and four assists, McKegg inked a one-year, minor leauge deal with the Penguins. Kevin Wickersham

June 2017 – The 24-year-old McKegg who was on waivers by the Lightning near the end of 2016, played a total of 15 games with the big club through the remainder of the season. With the Lightning having a plethora of AHL level prospects pushing for jobs in the NHL, the 2010 third-round pick will likely move on from the Lightning organization as an unrestricted free agent this offseason. If he is resigned, don’t expect any kind of a fantasy impact as he would likely slot in as a 13th or 14th forward. Brayden Olafson

May 2016- McKegg was traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Florida Panthers on June 19,2015 in exchange for Zack Hyman and a 2017 conditional  seventh round pick. During the 2015/16 season, McKegg spent most of his time with the Portland Pirates, playing 47 regular season games and three playoff games in the AHL. He made his Panthers debut on February 15, 2016, playing 15 regular season and one playoff game. McKegg didn’t make a big impact on the score sheet during his time in the NHL this season, generating only two goals in the regular season. However, in the AHL, he scored 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) in 47 games played. McKegg has the potential to produce a significant amount of offence, in his time in the OHL, he was at over a point per game pace, generating 270 points in 262 games played. By: Chris Crawford
