Observations:

October 2017 - Over the years, each Development and Rookie camp was more impressive for Cavan Fitzgerald. His career in the QMJHL looks to have prepared him well for his rookie professional season and has locked down the 5th defender spot with the San Jose Barracuda right out of training camp. Fitzgerald already sees time on the power play. Fitzgerald checks a lot of boxes. He has decent size, good awareness on both ends of the ice and is an able puck distributor. His skating is above-average and does not neglect his own zone. In all, he is a young defender with a complete toolbox that should only get better as he gains experience in the AHL. Zachary DeVine

December 2016 – Fitzgerald was not drafted into the QMJHL nor the NHL but, as the saying goes, hard work pays off. The former-Halifax Mooseheads’ defender was a teammate of Timo Meier and after an invite to the Sharks’ development camp, signed a three-year deal with the team. His continued deveopment has been impressive and, during San Jose’s development and rookie camps, he was a standout defender, often paired with Jeremy Roy for an effective pairing with the puck.

Fitzgerald has decent size, skates well and his puck skills are solid as well. He was named captain of the Shawinigan Cataractes for the 2016-17 season and registered nine goals and 13 assists in 17 games before suffering an upper-body injury that will likely keep him out until January. Fantasy Outlook: C+

While many of his points have come on the power play, Fitzgerald has all the makings of a professional defenseman.
